The widespread use (and misuse) of networked technologies in higher education raises important issues of legal and ethical concern. The growing use of the Internet as a new communications media challenges our ability to apply old laws, existing policies, or appeal to a common set of ethical norms.

Project NEThicssm is an initiative of the Office of Information Technology at the University of Maryland. It was formed in the fall of 1996 to promote ethical uses of the Internet. It also brings an identity to the team of individuals who are responsible for managing incidents of misuse of university computing resources.
