What are system vulnerabilities?

- VIRUS: A program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer, often with another program, without your knowledge and runs against your wishes. Viruses can also replicate themselves. All computer viruses are manmade. Even a simple virus is dangerous because it can quickly use all available memory and bring the system to a halt.
- WORM: A worm is a special type of virus that can replicate itself and use memory, but cannot attach itself to other programs.
- TROJAN HORSE: A destructive program that masquerades as a benign application. Unlike viruses, Trojan horses do not replicate themselves but they can be just as destructive. One of the most insidious types of Trojan horse is a program that claims to rid your computer of viruses but instead introduces viruses onto your computer.
- ADWARE: A form of spyware that collects information about the user in order to display advertisements in the Web browser based on the information it collects from the user's browsing patterns, profiling you for targeted advertising or more sinister purposes. Adware programs pop up ads in your face even when your browser is not open.
- SPYWARE: Any software that covertly gathers user information through the user's Internet connection without his or her knowledge, usually for advertising purposes, but it could enable identity theft. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else.
Protect Yourself Against Viruses and Spyware
1. Ensure your antivirus program is up-to-date: Antivirus software programs attempt to identify, thwart and eliminate computer viruses and other malicious software (malware).
- Install a good virus protection program like Norton AntiVirus and McAffee Virus Scan. Set it to run in the background and keep it on.
- It is critical to make sure that your program is constantly updated.
- Most of the newer versions of these anti-virus programs have an automatic update feature, but you can also click on the Update button if necessary.
- Additionally, you want to make sure your anti-virus program has the capability to scan e-mail and files as they are downloaded from the Internet. This will help prevent malicious programs from even reaching your computer.
2. Protect against spyware and adware: Spyware and adware are software programs that covertly gather your information through your internet connection without your knowledge, usually for advertising purposes. These programs not only slow the operation of your computer, but also can be a security risk. Your antivirus software may not include spyware and adware detecting programs. If this is the case, make sure you install these programs onto your computer. Because no single utility finds everything, it is suggested that you have more than one of these programs on your computer .
3. Install a firewall: A firewall is a system that prevents unauthorized access to your computer. A good software firewall will protect your computer from outside attempts to control or gain access your computer, and usually provides additional protection against the most common Trojan programs or e-mail worms.
