The core mission of Project NEThicssm is to educate the campus community about the ethical and legal implications of computer use.
Outreach activities include:
- Campus training programs;
- Classroom guest lectures;
- Campus resource fairs;
- Live satellite teleconferences;
- Experiential workshops;
- Seminars and tutorials;
- Keynote addresses;
- Panel presentations; and,
- Poster sessions.
Audiences include:
- Faculty of academic departments;
- Staff or administrative units;
- Students or student groups;
- Professional associations;
- Government agencies; and,
- Non-profit organizations.
Topics include:
- Rights and responsibilities in an online environment;
- Netiquette for Internet communications;
- Safe computing practices for children and parents including filtering of indecent material and sexual predators;
- High-tech hate including awareness of hate groups on the Internet and bias-related incidents;
- Electronic cheating and Web citations;
- Intellectual property issues including ownership and use of copyrights and trademarks;
- Privacy issues including campus data and information access, student records and Buckley Amendment, and fair information practices;
- Freedom of speech issues including harassment, hate speech, threats, defamation, obscenity, and child pornography; and,
- Computer crimes including federal and state legislation.
